AROUND MAQUOKETA AS OF 9-4-02 by Judy
Carr
The Maquoketa Historic Preservation Commission
will be holding a Fall Tour of Homes on Sunday, September 29, 2002
from 11:00 – 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 each and can be purchased
at City Hall, The Shopper and the Don Yanda Vet Clinic.
The Maquoketa City Council approved the third and
final reading of the ordinance allowing race track special use
permits in I-3 Heavy Industrial Districts. In the future, any
proposed racetracks would require approval from the Zoning Board of
Adjustments. If a racetrack is proposed, all of the property owners
within a 200 foot radius would be notified of the meeting so that
they could attend the meeting.
The City Council also approved the 3rd
reading of an ordinance that prohibits the use of compression
brakes. The Police Department had received complaints from citizens
regarding the noise made from using these brakes. After reviewing
ordinances from several towns, the Public Safety Committee
recommended a version to the Council that was approved.
The Council just approved the last reading of an
ordinance that changes the speed limit on Myatt Drive to 25 mph.
Previously, the speed limit was 35 mph but there has been some
concern regarding visibility on the street.
The third reading of the ordinance to rescind the
building code has been approved. Upon publication on August 24th,
the City will return to enforcing zoning restrictions rather than
building restrictions.
The Council approved the application for voluntary
annexation filed by Tom Tiefenthaler for property adjacent to the
car wash west of town. Mr. Tiefenthaler intends to build a
Laundromat on the property.
The City Council has awarded the bid for the East
Platt and West Platt Street Trail to Tschiggfrie Excavating. This
award is contingent upon approval from the Iowa Department of
Transportation.
The City Council has set Trick-or-Treat for
Sunday, October 27th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
