The City's Landscape Visioning
Committee Begins Its Work by Linda Sturtz
5-7-02
A new committee has been organized to participate
in the 2002 Iowa’s Living Roadways Community Visioning Program.
The City's participation was funded through the award of a grant.
The Iowa’s Living Roadways Program is sponsored
by the Iowa Department of Transportation, the Iowa State University
Extension Landscape Architecture Department, and Trees Forever to
deliver design assistance to Iowa Communities.
Elaine Edwards has organized this committee of
Maquoketa community members. Patty Petersen of Trees Forever and Meg
Flenker, a landscape architect, will lead the group by identifying
areas that need enhancement and improvement through the use of
plantings. Street scaping, trails, new roadways, entryways and
bioengineering will also be focused on. Upon completion, Maquoketa
will receive a series of display boards that will include
architectural landscape drawings and a master plan will be
formulated. The planning boards can be used up to ten years. After
completion of the display boards, the committee will implement the
different projects and acquire funding, as there are federal and
state grants for money to put different phases of the plan into
place. This is a very exciting program and we are all anxious to see
it work to make our community a more attractive place to reside and
work. Call the Chamber for the time and place of the next meeting if
you would like to become a part of this exciting process.
For anyone interested in attending, the
committee's next meeting will be held at the Maquoketa State Bank,
West Office on May 16 at 7:00 p.m.
