Economic Development Report by Linda
Sturtz, Maquoketa Chamber Director
5-7-02
Economic development highlights for the months of
April and May are as follows:
Smart Conference:
The Iowa Department of Economic Development and Iowa Utility
Association sponsored the annual Smart Conference in Des Moines on
Thursday, May 2. City Manager Brian Wagner and Chamber/Economic
Development Director Linda Sturtz attended. Smart ideas for retail
retention and expansion; marketing your community; hot jobs/cool
communities; and cultural awareness: a smart idea, were among the
topics addressed. It was a very good conference with many ideas that
we hope to explore in Maquoketa.
Industrial Visits:
On April 12, the visitation team met with Dan McDonell of Dynagear
Oil Pumps and toured the Dynagear facility. We were very pleased to
report that things are going very well for Dynagear.
On May 8, we met with Bob Rupp of the Maquoketa
Company. They have just completed a large renovation project to
their plant facility.
Jackson County Department of Human Services
andGannon Center: The County Board of
Supervisors awarded a five year lease to Jack and Pam Rosenberg to
lease their building at 115 S. Olive St. (formerly Rosenberg Auto
Parts) to the Dept. of Human Services and Gannon Center. Remodeling
of the building will begin immediately with a fall deadline for
completion. This will be a nice compliment to the downtown area.
Family Dollar Grand Opening:
The Family Dollar distribution center will host a grand opening for
invited guests on Thursday, May 30. This will mark the opening of
the 6th distribution center in the United States. Over
400 associates have been hired to date to service the 907,000 square
foot distribution center.
