MARCH 2008

Thursday, March 13 - Nature Tales - 10:00 a.m. at the Hurstville Interpretive Center.  For pre-school age children.  Theme: Insects, Book to be read "Don't Stomp that Bug!  We will learn about ants, beetles, dragonflies, honeybees, & ladybugs.  Depending on weather, we will go outside and see what insects we can discover in the butterfly garden and prairie. 

Saturday,  March 15 - at sunrise (6:15 am) - Duck WaddleDubuque Audubon Society Blakes Parking Lot at Green Island State Wildlife Area - Cost: Free. Join the Dubuque Audubon Society for the spring waterfowl count at Green Island. See if you can identify one waddle from another!

Sunday, March 16 - Huge Indoor Garage Sale - at the Jackson County Fair Grounds.  8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Admission $1.50 (under 7 free).  $10.00 Early Bird at 7:30 a.m. 80 plus Individual Sellers.

Monday, March 17 - City Council Meeting - 7 p.m. at City Hall.  Live Broadcast Channel 18.

Saturday, March 22  - Jim Post’s Mark Twain and the Laughing River - 7:00 p.m. at the Ohnward Fine Arts Center.  According to the Smithsonian Institute "This depiction of Mark Twain is nothing less than brilliant, and each sentence and song is a gem. This is a show that should be Broadway bound! "Rousing ... an ideal family show". Tickets: $15.00 ( in advance )  $18.00 ( at the door ).

Tuesday,  March 25, 2008 at 7:00 PM - Friends of the Jackson County Conservation Board Meeting - Hurstville Interpretive Center.  Interested in supporting and assisting the Jackson County Conservation Board? Join the Friends of Jackson County Conservation for their spring meeting and learn more about the benefits of being a friend and become involved!

Sunday, March 30th at 1:00 pm - Bird Hike - Hurstville Interpretive Center - Cost: Free
Join members of the Dubuque Audubon Society for a bird hike around Jackson County. Birding will begin at the Hurstville Marsh and then continue to the Maquoketa Caves State Park and Buzzard Ridge Wildlife Area.

Sunday,  March 30th at 1:30 PM - Iowa Wildlife Action Plan - Hurstville Interpretive Center.
Cost: Free.  This plan is the first attempt ever to spell out management plans for most of the state's wildlife and evaluate the status of each species.  Katy Reeder, Iowa DNR, will also examine stresses on wildlife and their habitats and lay out the Iowa DNR's visions and strategies to conserve wildlife over the next 25 years.

Join us along with David Shealer, professor at Loras College for an afternoon of banding birds.

Thursday, April 10 -  10:00 am -Nature Tales: Stars & Planets - Hurstville Interpretive Center
Featuring the book The Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System.  Explore the night sky in a star lab and learn about constellations.  

Sunday, April 13 - 1:00 pm - Soils & Kids - Hurstville Interpretive Center
Chad Heinzel, of the UNI Geology Department will lead us in this interactive program for kids & parents in the development, use, & importance of soil.

Saturday, April 19 - 7:00  p.m.  -A Night of Magic with Bill Blagg III - Experience an unforgettable night with one of the nation’s top magical stars - Bill Blagg III. Bill is taking the art of magic to new heights by combining grand scale magic and illusions with special effect lighting to create an unbelievable experience for all ages. Tickets:  $18.00 (in advance) $21.00 (at the door) Children (12 & Under) Tickets: $12.00 (in advance) $14.00 (at the door).

Infiltration-based water management practices which will include rain gardens as one of a number of practices people can use to manage water more sustainable on their properties.

Saturday, April 26 - 10:00 AM - Wildflower Walk - Maquoketa Caves State Park at upper picnic shelter.  Join Naturalists for a hike at Maquoketa Caves for some wildflower viewing.
