Paul and Valerie Horst opened the Horst Chiropractic office in 1989. Paul packed up his wife and two sons and brought them back to Iowa. He was familiar with Iowa because he attended Palmer Chiropractic College and his wife is from Andrew. He had been practicing in Buffalo, New York for seven years when he decided to contact Dr. McAreavy to see if there were any job openings. Dr. McAreavy was ready to retire, so he purchased his practice and opened his office on Second Street. The rest is history. Horst continued his education during those 20 years. He obtained a diploma in chiropractic pediatrics, completing the three-year program in Chicago. "I enjoy helping women through their pregnancies and then treating the newborns and watching them grow," Horst said. "Children respond so well to chiropractics. We try and make the experience welcoming for the children with the aid of a special 'horse' adjusting table just for them." Following trends in holistic medicine, Horst became a certified acupuncturist through coursework in Kansas City. "I've found this to be beneficial in treating sinus conditions and knee problems. Acupuncture has been around for many years but is slowly gaining popularity in health care. It works well with chiropractic services," Horst explained.

He has onsite x-ray capabilities to help diagnose problem areas and improve patient care. Valerie Horst completed technician training at Palmer College. She works in the office taking x-rays, answering questions and helping patients learn and understand the benefits of chiropractics. Horst Chiropractic will host a 20-question trivia contest and hold monthly prize drawings to celebrate their anniversary. Paul and Valerie extend a thank you to everyone who helped make their last 20 years in Maquoketa so enjoyable.
